This is because of the expected widespread adoption of mobile broadband.

Although mobile broadband technology has been around for a few years, there have been a few factors holding it back, mainly cost and download speeds. Technological improvements however, have meant that mobile broadband is now a viable and cost efficient option.

The technology in question is known as High-Speed Downlink Packet Access or HSDPA and currently allows for download rates of up to 7.2Mbps, very close to rivalling the advertised rate of most fixed line connections. HSDPA speeds are likely to improve considerably as the technology becomes more widespread and network advancements are made.

Unlike other wireless technologies, notably WiFi, mobile broadband does not require a hotspot for operation, it is truly mobile. Making use of the 3G network, which covers around 90% of the UK you are able to get on the internet, wherever you can find a signal - similar to finding a signal on your phone. Moreover, this network is planned to cover 98% of the country by 2009.

All that is required to get online is a subscription and a USB dongle, often provided by the network operator.

There are a growing number of packages on the market, with the UKs main operators offering some very cost effective options. The majority of packages have a fixed limit on the amount you are able to download in a month, just like the caps imposed on fixed-line packages.

The difference with mobile broadband though is that the caps are generally much lower than that of fixed lines, making them an unsuitable option for users who wish to download large amounts and have access to a fixed line.

On the other hand, mobile broadband is likely to be the perfect option for business users who are on the move or students that are unable to afford costly line rental charges. It may be the only option for some users, such as residences too far away from their local exchange to get broadband, but who are within reach of the 3G network.

As mentioned the market for mobile broadband is growing quickly, with the technology expected to be fully incorporated into the broadband market throughout 2008. Finding cheap broadband is therefore very easy, even more so online.
Register Online%20home%20or%20business
Packages Home Basic Or Business Broadband
Packages
Streamyx FAQ
Self%20installation%20guide
Streamyx Speedtest
Agent Registration
Contact Us
Terms And Conditions
Privacy Policy
Disclaimer
Streamyx Kuala Lumpur
Streamyx Petaling Jaya
Streamyx Puchong
Streamyx Selayang

Business Prospects Of Wimax -- An ISP point of View

The prospects for WiMAX technology as a viable business opportunity are often the subject of debate amidst numerous actual or perceived challenges. Applying these innovative insights can make these arguments and challenges disappear.

Unlike most people's expectation of rural deployments, you might consider targeting SME's in urban areas. There are several reasons for this:

?There is a growing demand in business for bandwidth capable of carrying symmetrical traffic, for voice, applications and uploading of larger files.

?There is a small but growing need for separated last mile services. Currently, however many wired service providers you have, they all use the incumbents' last mile infrastructure based on its nearest telephone exchange location unless you have paid for an expensive dig from the next nearest exchange. This leads to single points of failure and the potential for business communications to be down for days, as can happen say with a cable duct fire somewhere in the spoke.

Your worst case environment would be a very high-density urban area with lots of interfering buildings, has multiple fibre networks, ADSL and SDSL in every exchange, hundreds of competing suppliers, a restrictive property planning regime with many 'listed' buildings, and no spare spectrum for FWA except the public 5.8GHz band.

To do this, because of the scale of competition from other service providers, your model needs to be disruptive. It has to offer things that businesses need (like QoS, toll-quality VoIP, high-quality video, symmetric bandwidth, higher capacities and network separation etc) at a lower cost.

This means stripping all unnecessary cost out of the model. You'll benefit from a quality RF planning tool that gives you a major advantage over other operators - mapping exactly where you can provide service, how to set up the customer antenna, what bandwidth can be achieved etc, based on your base-stations. You need to know exactly how to tune base-stations to avoid blackspots - without needing an RF team.

Although Wi-Fi and WiMAX often get confused, they are very different from an operators perspective. Wi-Fi is plug and play with no control over the wireless interface. WiMAX is not, it behaves more like a carrier ATM network. Wi-Fi is built into laptops and handsets, whereas FWA WiMAX requires larger standalone receivers (yours should mount on customer rooftops for optimum utilty).

The benefit is that WiMAX is very spectrally efficient, at least 50% more so than 3G networks, so it has much higher data-carrying capabilities in limited spectrum. All Wi-Fi shares the same public spectrum - WiMAX can work across a wide range. Wi-Fi provides service over a range of 100m, your WiMAX needs to provide 10Mbps over a range of 1.3km from a base-station non-line-of sight.

WiMAX can create carrier-class networks, Wi-Fi cannot ?not even with mesh networks. However, Wi-Fi with WiMAX backhaul gets some of the benefits of WiMAX as the backhaul such as VPNs. A lot of WiMAX customer equipment will come with Wi-Fi built in.

Dont wait for mobile (802.16e) WiMAX ?your experience with vendors may be that they're around fourteen months to two years behind on their promised delivery dates, and further delays could occur to key requirements. Dont expect good enough 802.16e equipment to build a network with until late 2007 at the earliest, and no usable CPE until 2008 ?as its mobile battery life is crucial and that will take time to get right.

There are big enough markets for FWA now. The most important thing is to grab the scarce resources first ?spectrum etc ?and make them yours. Except in those undeveloped countries without a mobile operator, mobile WiMAX will be very difficult to establish against incumbent operators with large installed bases because the areas covered are important to customers ?which is not a consideration for FWA.

Michael is the owner of FreedomFire Communications....including DS3-Bandwidth.com and Business-VoIP-Solution.com. But according to an FBI report in December 2004, nearly ten million people last year didn't ignore them and fell for the latest Internet scams. The money those victims lost totaled nearly $5 billion.

That number of victims and their losses are probably much higher because several cases go unreported every year. People either don't want to admit that it happened to them or have no idea who to report it to.

But that's how these thieves get away with Internet email scams for so long without getting caught. The only way to stop these con artists from operating is by reporting Internet scams to the proper authorities.

If you or someone you know has become a victim one of these scams here is where you can report it and do your part to catch these criminals. The best place to report email scams is The Internet Fraud Complaint Center or (IFCC). They are a partnership between the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the National White Collar Crime Center (NW3C). Their web address is: http://www1.ifccfbi.gov

The IFCC's mission is to address fraud committed over the Internet. For victims of Internet fraud, IFCC provides a convenient and easy-to-use reporting mechanism that alerts authorities of a suspected criminal or civil violation.

Reporting email scams to The Internet Fraud Complaint Center helps them arrest and convict the criminals that are ruining the Internet for everyone. Anyone should have the right to safe Internet surfing without having to worry about predators stealing their money or their identity.

Identity theft and these recent Internet scams are the fastest growing crimes in America today. You can make the Internet safer for everyone and help put a stop to this terrible crime just by reporting Internet scams to the IFCC. It will make a difference.

Copyright 2005 Spyware Information.com All Rights Reserved.

This article is provided by http://www.spyware-information.com where you will find free spyware cleaners, downloads, removal software, valuable tips and updated articles about adware and spyware that show you how protect yourself from identity theft. You can download a 1M file from a server, then you watch your clock carefully and see how long it will takes to finish. If it takes 20 seconds, then we can easily calculate the following result:

broadband speed = 1024k/20 = 51.2k/s

However, this way has some drawbacks:

1. Server's location will affect your broadband speed result;

2. Your Operating System may cache the file you downloaded before;

3. You need to watch your clock carefully to calculate the time.

This Cool Tool

Fortunately, I found this cool tool which will let you feel fun when you check broadband speed.

Yes, this is www.speedtest.net

Speedtest.net is a free broadband speed test with servers located all over the world. (eg. we choose San Francisco to test our speed)

If you click San Francisco, you will find the panel start to rotate and there is a star moving from destination to your City.

Is it cool? Yes, it is. After couple of seconds, the result will show up on the screen.

Check broadband speed Result

Moreover, you can rate your ISP as well.

Now that's an ending. Short, quick, final and filled with some cool pictures. You can start to use this tool check broadband speed any where any time.

Tony Joy, a blogger who wants to introduce Broadband basics for beginners

Broadband Speedup Blog
Streamyx Hulu Klang
Streamyx Kajang
Streamyx Batu Caves
Streamyx Hulu Langat
Streamyx Kepong
Streamyx Klang
Streamyx Pelabuhan Klang
Streamyx Seri Kembangan
Streamyx Shah Alam
Streamyx Subang Jaya
Streamyx Sungai Buloh
Streamyx List of Buildings
Ez 4g
Streamyx
Streamyx

Check Broadband Speed - Find A Tool

When you're deciding to check broadband speed, the important first step is to find a good tool.

Where is my good Tool?

I usually use a file download to check broadband speed which is an easy and simple way. Staying in touch with friends in other countries has switched from hand-written letters that could take weeks to arrive to e-mails and instant messages exchanged in nano-seconds.

Coupled with the recent boom of social networking sites, it has never been easier to keep in touch with family and friends.

Face-to-face conversation has, for some, been replaced with text messaging and voice chatting via broadband technology. But the telephone hasn't become completely obsolete. Rather, it has been upgraded, with broadband phone lines now becoming more readily available.

Internet phone clients such as Skype use broadband to offer the opportunity to chat with other Skype users for free, while also giving their users the option of a credit system where the client can call landlines and mobiles, all from the comfort of our computer chairs.

Even mobile phones have become a platform for communicating digitally, with instant messaging and VoIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) services now more readily available. Some have tapped further into the market and offered cheap broadband deals along with their phone services, further enhancing our digital experience.

With the release of multi-format devices such as the iPhone, users can now access a range of services - including web browsers and chat clients - with broadband providers now offering a variety of packages to suit your needs.

Whether you're a seasoned gamer or a total novice, the vast range of cheap broadband providers available on the market ensures that there will be deals available to suit your experience level - and your pocket.

Even the way you read the morning paper is about to change. The recent launch of Kindle - Amazon's new palmtop reading device - is sure to change the way we buy and view books.

These networks can be in the same building but are normally in either adjacent buildings or with the proper antennas and line of sight bridges can even connect networks up to 30 miles apart. Wireless bridges connect to the wired network through the Ethernet port and replicate that data to a remote network bridge or access point via 802.11a/b/g wireless (Wi-Fi) protocol.

Point to Point (ptp) Bridging:
A point to point topology is the simplest to configure and connects two networks in two separate locations, normally a remote building or warehouse, via one wireless bridge in each location.

Point to Multi-point (point to multipoint, ptmp) bridging:
A point to Multipoint topology wirelessly connects multiple locations together allowing them to share the same network resources. The bridge at the main, central, location is called the root bridge or base station bridge and all data passing between the wireless bridge clients must pass through the root bridge first. These point-to-multipoint networks are used in wireless internet service providers (WISP), large corporate campuses, distribution facilities, school districts, public safety applications and many others...

What do I need to build a Point to Point Bridge Link?

Line of sight between the two locations. You may need to install a pole or tower on your roof top in order to achieve this. A site survey is recommended before installation. Select a wireless bridge: Here are some things to consider when selecting a wireless bridge.

Distance: Distance will determine what gain antenna will be required and if you need an external antenna or if an integrated antenna will be sufficient.

Wireless protocol: Do you want to use a bridge base on 802.11 standards so that you have interoperability with other bridge manufacturers or would you like something with a protocol proprietary to a particular vendor? There are some added security benefits when using a proprietary over a standard protocol.

Frequency: Do you want to use a licensed or unlicensed (2.4, 5-5.8 GHz) band?
Indoor or Outdoor: Indoor wireless bridges are less expensive but you will have to buy quite a bit of LMR-400 cable to connect to the outdoor antenna. This adds a great deal of signal loss and in the end you will need a higher gain antenna to compensate. An outdoor bridge can be placed right next to the antenna and therefore cuts down on the amount of cable you need to buy as well as the amount of signal loss.

Select a wireless antenna: If the bridge you selected does not already have an integrated antenna you will need to choose one now. For point to point links we suggest a directional panel, grid or solid parabolic dish antennas.

Peripherals: You will need to select the appropriate lightning arrestors and RF antenna cables to get you connected and protected.

Double it: Now double the amount of hardware you selected so that you have the identical setup on both sides.

Installation:
Finally, select a professional installer in your area to run the appropriate cables, install any required poles or towers, align the antennas and configure the radios. If you have any questions about this let us know and we will assist you in finding a quality installer. If you want to try it out yourself go for it but DON'T FORGET to bench test the bridges before actually installing them in the field.

Click here for more info on a <a You may need to install a pole or tower on your roof top in order to achieve this.

Click here for more info on a Wireless Bridge.
?gclid=couownl Mpmcfq0begodpuegrg
Aom Jaychou
Gettingstarted
?gclid=clucx Maojmcfqybewodbxxirq
Callerr Thumb
?gclid=cpzusz Onzmcfryxewodxyj5rq
Storev01 Ptalk3
Disclaimer
?gclid=clurneicojmcfrszewod9f8zqq
Related Products Bg2
Callerr T
?subang=www
?gclid=ckto8teomjmcfrqzewodpq5yrg
?gclid=cjd9oousm5mcfriyewodefdbrq
Phone5

So What Is A Wireless Bridge Anyway?

So what is a wireless bridge anyway?
In simple terms a wireless bridge is a device that allows two or more complete networks of users to transparently communicate to one another over long distances without wires.

A point to Multipoint topology wirelessly connects multiple locations together allowing them to share the same network resources. type='text'>The Evolution of Cable High-Speed Internet

The computer has altered in modern life beyond our wildest imaginations. Well, I guess I should actually say the PC and Mac. But were really splitting hairs there, either one of these is offering you a fantastic service. Since the mid-nineties, many of us have become accustomed to the home computer. More than likely we have started out with those large bulky desktop units with giant TV like monitors, but an evolution has certainly taken hold. The same can be said about our Internet service. Now a days with high-speed Internet connections we hardly remember those painfully slow dial-up days. It is now the era of cable high speed Internet.

Are you currently using a high-speed Internet service? Are you a fan of DSL or cable high speed Internet? These are common questions recently. This field is very competitive and great deals are to be had. The basic questions to ask are you offering and how much will it cost me? That sounds about right doesn't it? Oh and of course reliability is always a factor. Of course we all want cable high speed Internet, but we don't want a fat bill at the end of each month. Being a fan of cable high speed Internet myself, I have certainly tried my share of services. I first tried a brand called Roadrunner and found that it performed quite adequately. Then, because I moved across the country, I gave Comcast cable high speed Internet a shot. I had no complaints with their service overall.

More recently I relocated again. This time I had no choice but to give the local cable high speed Internet service a shot. I'm sorry to say that it didn't work out too well. While the service worked fine most of the time, the prices were higher than what I had previously experienced and a little bit more than I wanted to pay. This is never good! Shortly after acquiring this new service, I made the decision to go back to Roadrunner, which essentially provided the same service but at a lower cost.

Do you use dial-up? I hope not because I know how slow and unreliable those connections can be. Dial-up is certainly a concept of the previous millennium. And don't you hate that nasty sound when the modem is connecting to the Internet? You could be enjoying cable high speed Internet at a reasonable price? If you have yet to try cable high speed Internet, then I strongly suggest that you check it out. I think you will be pleasantly surprised at the affordable rates that are offered. While some people like to save a few bucks and go with DSL, I don't really recommend it.

I'm on the Internet quite a bit for both work and home use and I have found that there is absolutely no substitute to the speed and quality of service offered by cable high-speed Internet. The whole buzz of technology has worn off, and cable high speed Internet should become the standard bearer for every household so check it out and see for yourself.

Morgan Hamilton offers expert advice and great tips regarding all aspects concerning internet.

Without a WISP (Wireless ISP) service in your area, or wifi at Starbucks, your favorite coffee shop, or even some McDonalds and Burger Kings, you don't have a choice, you cannot get online. Or at least that was true in the past.

The major cellular vendors are beefing up their networks for what is believed to be one of the "next big things". You see, these vendors like Verizon Wireless, Sprint PCS/Nextel, Cingular, and T-Mobile have all invested millions of dollars in providing cellular towers across the country so that you can get a cell signal in almost any decently populated areas. Competition is fierce, and each carrier is looking for some kind of value-added service or function to entice customers to switch to their service.

One of the biggest things they have done recently is to allow you to get online from your laptop computer using one of their "air cards", sometimes known as an "EVDO card". These cards plug into the PCMCIA slot on your laptop (almost all laptops have a PCMCIA slot), and as long as you can pick up a decent signal from that carrier's cell tower, you can get online with your laptop and this manufacturer-specific air card!

Verizon and Cingular appear to be leading the pack with this technology, with new high-speed hotspots appearing regularly across the country. Sprint is also investing heavily into creating more Sprint-specific hotspot areas for their service. T-Mobile also has this service available. With these carriers, you can get the "data-only" plan without being required to have one of that carrier's voice/cell service plans.

From a performance perspective, T-Mobile trails the pack significantly. Although their plan is the cheapest (about $30 per month for unlimited access), performance is barely as good as a dial-up connection. But if dial-up speed is sufficient for you, this can be a very mobile and cost-effective option.

As of the end of February 2006, in areas where Verizon had their high-speed option available, average download speed was measured at 563k, which is a speed that many home DSL or cable users don't get as high as. Verizon currently has this service available in about 70 markets. About 38% of responders reported seeing speeds greater than 600k.

In areas where the high-speed version of the Sprint equivalent is available, average download speed is reported as 641k, and is available in about 108 markets nationwide. About 47% reported seeing speeds higher than 600k regularly.

The Cingular equivalent reported an average download speed of 581k in areas where the service is available.

Be SURE to set your expectations correctly. A strong cell signal is required from the carrier providing the service to get the best possible speed, in the same sense that a voice cell connection may be scratchy if the cell signal in a given location is marginal. In areas that can deliver this data service but have not yet been upgraded to provide the high-speed option, typical connection speed (again with a strong cell signal) is reported as significantly less, around 152k as an average, or about 3 times the speed of a decent dial-up connection.

The plans can be a bit pricey, but you're paying for truly mobile connectivity without being tied to an Ethernet cable and modem, or a particular coffee shop hotspot offering wireless like Starbucks. The plans run about $80 per month for unlimited access, although Verizon recently announced a plan offering their unlimited access plan for $60 if you also get a 2 year voice cellular plan with it (at additional cost of course). The carriers also have cheaper plans with a monthly data transfer limit, but be very aware that if you start using this regularly, the overage charges will end up costing much more than just opting for the "unlimited" plan in the first place.

The good news is that it's easier to learn about, shop, and compare ALL of these plans and the "air cards" now than it ever has been.

In fact here's 2 resources that will help you do just that:

EVDOinfo.com

EVDO Forums

The additional good news is that a LOT of people are not aware that this capability exists, and it exists at a price that is much less than it was only a year or two ago! So take advantage of the possibilities....and expand your wireless experience!

Michael is the owner of FreedomFire Communications....including DS3-Bandwidth.com and Business-VoIP-Solution.com.

Due to a glitch my cable provider experienced on Thanksgiving Day I was without cable for 5 days.

You would think because it was a holiday weekend and I really wasn't supposed to work anyway, this would be no big deal, wrong! I live on the internet every day for work purposes, even at that I was amazed at how much personal stuff my wife and I do online.

It started Thursday evening when my daughter called to tell us she had sent an e-mail with pictures of our granddaughters dressed up for Thanksgiving dinner. Couldn't check the e-mail without a cable connection. The same went for all of the other personal e-mails we received over the weekend and could not access until Monday night.

I'm also a huge fan of online bill paying. I pay all of my bills online with the exception of one that I have to pay over the telephone. I haven't ordered checks from my bank in probably two years. Couldn't pay bills on Friday like I had planned without an internet connection.

So we're into Friday, I can't get much work done without the internet, I can't pay bills as I was planning and no e-mail correspondence. On top of this my wife has the weekend off work so she capitalizes on the situation and puts me to work around the house. Don't get me wrong I don't mind helping but she had an unfair advantage and milked it for all it was worth.

Next we decide to go to the movies, the problem is, we always use the internet to see what movies are on, where they are playing and what time they start. Couldn't do that! I had to go out and buy a newspaper to find the information. I honestly can't remember the last time I did this; it's so much easier to click the mouse a few times and have all the information right in front of you.

My wife had also planned to do some Christmas shopping online over the weekend, that didn't happen either. Fortunately she does not like going to malls and fighting the crowds so that was put on hold.

Finally on Monday evening I saw the cable light on my modem turn back on, service was restored! Although I'm still waiting for a technician to come and verify all is well, for now I'm back online.

The bottom line is; If you have ever wondered if the consumer shift to the internet is really as big as all the marketers want you to believe, try going without internet access for a few days and see how it affects your daily life!

Greg Greenamyer is an entrepreneur with 30 years of small business experience including 9 years of internet marketing. Neither did the untimely and messy demise of SunRocket. So just where do things stand now...and where may they be headed?

Vonage's biggest competition (and other independent VoIP providers) continues to mainly be the larger phone and cable companies, especially the ones that are bundling all of the various features (tv, internet, and phone).

Outside of the cable companies, Baby Bells, I think right now there are too many companies to list and too many companies without a successful plan thrown in the mix (think SunRocket).

For budget VoIP, there are lots of options today still. However, the legal issues that hit Vonage will likely bankrupt any of the budget providers. Although there's a strength in numbers that reduces the odds of any major issues should that happen, unlike the SunRocket fiasco.

Right now the market is pretty much a free for all and too many people are jumping into the business without truly understanding it. E.g., "We have VoIP! It never works!" These companies don't do the research into networking. Any glitches on the network will affect calls, call quality, etc. They dish out mega bucks (SunRocket) and flunk out because they're so focused on solely one portion of it.

The common concern in VoIP applications is a flurry of issues from the home based segment: One Way Audio, dropped ATA connections, etc. If you really look at what is happening, specifically who is being used for the internet connection (e.g. Cable companies + VoIP = headache), and what equipment is used, you'll see a pattern. It's the internet provider not the VoIP service provide who is at fault in over 95% of the cases.

But the general public as a whole just doesn't understand this. Until they do it will continue to be an uphill battle for residential VoIP providers.

Far too many companies don't take this into consideration on the home segment. Think about Farmer John or Grandma Jane who know next to nothing about the technology calling your company for help that has nothing to do with you. "Your VoIP service sucks! Now I can't even get onto Yahoo!". As a courtesy you would help them even though their cable provider or ISP is to blame. So how do you offset costs from that?

Companies such as Cox, Comcast, Qwest, etc. are providing reliable service for a fair price and offer "all you can eat" packages with arguably descent customer service to boot. As companies such as Cisco further refine technology for the Cable/Carrier markets, more and more options are going to present themselves (such as DOCSIS 3.0 = 100Mbps +, etc), and the market for companies with the copper/fiber to your home are in a great position to control the experience and leverage existing business (think Verizon's Fios).

However, I would argue that wireless companies are in greater position to displace or contend with companies such as Vonage. Again, you have a company that owns the transport, technology evolving at an amazing pace (e.g. WiMax, etc), and now you have a mobile delivery that will get better with time. I believe that options allowing for mobility and a cheap delivery to the masses is incredibly important (who doesn't have a cell phone these days?), and I believe that if you own the delivery method, you are in a great position to provide cost effective solutions to the consumer.

Many arguments can be made about the current stability of wireless, but I'm optimistic that it cannot get worse :). In addition, many arguments can be made about regulation surrounding these markets and that too can sway arguments - but politics drive me nuts, so I digress. I'll stand by and argue that those in control of the delivery medium (wireless, copper, fiber, etc) are in the greatest position to provide good customer service, have the resources to ride thru legal issues, etc. because they have the benefit of an annuity stream .... and additional value added services should be a 'no brainer' for them.

Michael is the owner of FreedomFire Communications....including DS3-Bandwidth.com and Business-VoIP-Solution.com. Most laptops these days are Wi-Fi enabled. That means that they have the wireless hardware and software built into the computer. To the average consumer, wireless is a form of magic. You turn it on and it works, right? Not always. Understanding the basics to wireless will help avoid frustration and headaches.

First, before we get into the basics of wireless networking, I have a few opinions to express.

It seems that everybody wants to go wireless with their laptops and desktop PCs. Wireless for laptops makes sense, since they get moved around between work and home and points in between. You can always connect using the Wi-Fi network at work or steal bandwidth from someone else. There are hotspots all over. There are ethical questions involved with borrowing?your neighbors signal. Let your conscience be your guide.

Wireless for desktops is an open subject. Since most of us usually set our desktops up on our home or office workstations, they tend not to move around. The only benefit of having a wireless desktop is that you dont have the expense and trouble of running Ethernet cable around your house. If you are not a DYIer, an Ethernet cable installation is an extra outlay. If youre lucky, your present PC is only a few feet away from your Broadband Modem. I personally prefer to have all my stationary PCs hooked up with Cat 5 Ethernet cables. That way I dont load up the wireless bandwidth on the router. Well talk more on bandwidth later.

There are hardware requirements to wireless networking. These are the things you need to communicate.

At home you need:

(1) a Broadband internet connection (Cable or DSL modem),

(2) a router to broadcast the wireless signal,

(3) a wireless enabled computer.

You cannot set up a wireless network using a Dial-Up connection. Period. I recommend that you power off your Broadband Modem and any existing computer systems before you begin the installation of the wireless router. The computing equipment will start to negotiate with your router automatically on start up. This will get you on the network without confusion. The router and existing PCs should not need any further configuration. The default or current settings should work. Your PC should already be set to DHCP in your Network Connections TCP/IP properties window. If it werent you would not have been able to connect to your ISP. This is a default setting of your PC.

The Broadband internet connection gear should already be present. Thats the Cable or DSL Modem that your Internet Service Provider installed when you got their service. Its connected to the Cable or DSL filter connection coming from your wall. The Modem has two connectors as a rule. One for the Cable or DSL data into the Modem, and one RJ45 connector you probably have connected to the computer you have in service now.

Youll need to unplug the Ethernet cable between the computer and the Modem. Reconnect that cable to your wireless router. It goes into a RJ45 connector usually labeled WAN?for Wide Area Network. The only other connection you will need to make is to connect another Ethernet cable between from one of the wired ports on the back of the router to your PC. There are usually 4 of them. Any one will do to reconnect your existing PC so its on the network. The existing PC will get its internet connection through this port. Your routers default settings should allow you to start connecting to your Wi-Fi enabled computers.

If all the cables are correctly placed, you should now be able to get on the Internet from you existing computers and your wireless computers.

Some quick notes of interest:

(A) Your Wi-Fi router is transmitting and receiving in the 2.4MHZ range. So are your Wi-Fi enabled computers. This is the same frequency range of a number of cordless telephones. You may have interference on your cordless phones once the Wi-Fi network is installed. If this occurs youll need to get 5.8 MHZ phones or put up with the noise.

(B) One of the most common questions I get is ?strong>I bought a wireless laptop and I cant get on the internet. Why not??If your wireless router is installed properly, then your wireless laptop may need configuration. Go to your Network Places or Network Neighborhood for a wizard to help you set up your computer for wireless.

(C) Bandwidth is the volume of traffic you can sustain through your network. The more devices using the Wi-Fi network, the slower the network uploads/downloads will be.

Remember, your wireless network works a lot like your cordless phone system. You need a transmitter/receiver at each end. Think of the router as the base station and the wireless PC as the handset. You cant talk on your cordless phone if the base station is unplugged. So without a wireless router in service, you cant communicate with the Internet. Hotspots are just spillover signal from someones wireless router.

Randolph M.

Randolph M. Along with high-speed Internet, many users may also use a router to allow multiple computers to connect to the Internet. This post will describe how a router is used to connect multiple computers. To make it easier to understand, I will use where you live as a comparison to how your computer is connected to the Internet.

What is an IP Address?

IP addresses are a series of numbers in the form: nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn, where nnn is a one to three digit number. An IP address is unique to an individual computer on a network, similar to how your home has a unique address. For an Internet connection, an IP address is supplied by your Internet Service Provider (ISP). In some cases, your ISP may provide you with more than one IP address, which allows you to connect multiple computers. As you will see later, however, you can still connect multiple computers with a single IP address.

Connecting a Single Computer

Connecting a single computer to your high-speed Internet is very simple to do. Simply connect a network cable into your modem, and then into the network card in your computer. Your computer will then be assigned an IP address from your ISP. For example, if your ISP assigned you the IP address of 24.24.50.17, then your computer will have that IP address.

When you make a request to a server, such as for a Web page, the Web server knows which IP address made the request. The information is then sent through the Internet and back to your computer. This is similar to when someone sends you mail to your home. The address on the mail allows it to be delivered to your home and not somewhere else.

Connecting Multiple Computers

How can multiple computers connect if only one address is assigned? When you make a request for a Web page, how does it know which computer requested that page? Let's take our home analogy one step further. Let's say instead of living in a house, you live in an apartment. When someone sends you mail, they not only include your address but also an apartment number. This number is internal to your apartment building and every apartment has its own unique number. Similarly, multiple computers can connect to the Internet if they each had there own unique local IP address. This can be handled by a router.

A router is a piece of hardware that connects directly to the modem. Each computer is then connected to the router, instead of the modem. Now instead of your computer having the IP address supplied by your ISP, your router now is assigned that IP address. This is similar to your router acting as the apartment building.

The beauty of a router is that it can assign its own local IP addresses. When you connect a computer to the router it now receives one of the IP addresses assigned by your router, similar to how each apartment has it's own number. Now when you make a request for a Web page, the request is sent using the same ISP address, but this time it is assigned to the router. When the Web page is returned, the router receives the request, and sends it locally to the computer that requested the page.

The router also has its own local address that is similar to the local IP addresses of the computers. So now the router has two addresses assigned to it: an external one provided by your ISP, and a local one provided by it. This allows the router to connect to both the Internet and the local network.

Note: The 192.168.xxx.xxx address are special IP addresses reserved for Local Area Networks (LANs).

Managing a FTP or Web Server on Your Network

Let's take a look at this scenario. You have a router connecting multiple computers to the Internet. But now you want to create a FTP or Web server. No problem. You setup the necessary software on a computer on your network, told someone outside your network the local IP address of your FTP server and they try to connect. They then discover that they can't connect. Why? Its similar to someone mailing something to you by just specifying your apartment number and no address.

The IP address assigned to your computer is local to your network. You can connect to that computer from within your network, but not from the Internet. You will need to use your ISP-assigned IP address (the one assigned to your router) to have someone from the Internet connect to your FTP server. The problem is that your router is assigned that IP and not your computer, and since an IP address must be unique, how can two computers have the same IP? The answer: they can't, but they don't need to.

Routers have the ability to forward information on a port to a specific computer. A port is a numbered channel that data can be sent through on a network. You cannot physically see it as it is a virtual channel used extensively in networking for sending/receiving data. For FTP servers the default port is 21; however another port can be used.

Open your router setup and look for the port forwarding option. Specify the internal IP address of your FTP server and the port number and then save that information. Now when a user tries to access your FTP site, they must use the ISP IP address that is assigned to your router. The router will then notice that the data is being sent on port 21 and then forward it automatically to your FTP server. A Web server can be setup the same way, but its default port is usually 80.

Note: By default a router will dynamically assign IP addresses to the computers connected to it. This means that the first computer to connect to the router will get the first available IP address, and the next will get the second, and so on. If you manage an FTP server, it may be easier to assign a static IP address to the computers to ensure that the FTP server always has the same IP address.

This article described how to connect one or more computers to one Internet connection. It is important to remember the following:

If you have one computer connected directly to the modem, then that computer will be assigned the IP address from your ISP.
When using a router, the the router will be assigned the IP address from your ISP. Any computers connected to the router will be assigned a local address by the router.
A router will have the ISP IP address and a local IP address. This allows it to connect to both the Internet and your network.
When setting up a computer as a FTP, Web, or other server to communicate over the Internet, it is important to use the router's IP address to access your server. You will then need to forward the necessary port to your server.

For more information, please read the Technically Easy blog.

Paul Salmon has been involved with computers for 20 years and currently works as a technical systems analyst. type='text'>Some DSL Broadband Definitions

Often too many people get confused with all the definitions, here we have explained in easy to understand terms.

ADSL:
Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line - asymmetric meaning it's faster downstream than upstream.

ASAM:
Advanced Services Access Manager -Whether you have a DSLAM or ASAM in your exchange doesn't really matter. They do the same thing. See DSLAM's as well.

ATM:
Asynchronous Transfer Mode - a method of encapsulation which is capable of many virtual circuits. With these, providers (ISP's) can split an ATM connection (155Mbit or 622Mbit) up into many connections. ATM isn't just used for DSL but in the case of DSL it's used to provision each customer.

Contention Ratios:
A contention ratio is the number of users to xMbit of bandwidth. For example some providers offer 2Mbit DSL, with a ratio of 50:1, meaning 50 users to 1Mbit of bandwidth.

CPE:
Customer Premises Equipment, the term that describes the equipment used on the customer end of a connection, for example your DSL modem/router or cable modem.

DSL:
Digital Subscriber Line.

DSLAM:
Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer ?They are placed in DSL enabled Telecomm exchanges, when your modem syncs up and the DSL light comes on, it means you are connected. When data travels down your connection, it goes from the CPE -> DSLAM -> RAN -> ISP

ERX:
Edge Routing Exchange. See RAN.

IPNet:
Telecommunications backhaul networks for carrying traffic from the customer to the ISP, i.e. carrying traffic from RAN's to ISP's.

Ping or Latency:
A ping measures the time in milliseconds that it takes for a packet to travel from your computer to a remote computer and back to you again. Just because you can't ping a given host, quite a lot of providers are beginning to filter ICMP (pings come under this protocol) traffic because it is commonly used to attack hosts and wastes a lot of bandwidth. Many providers also give low priority to ping (ICMP) traffic which may mean your ping at a command line isn't very good, but in say a game, things may be fine.

RAN:
Regional Access Node These aggregates many DSLAM's connections and then feed the data to an ISP

RTT
Round Trip Time - the time it takes in milliseconds for a packet to go from A to B and back again. See ping.

SDSL
Symmetrical Digital Subscriber Line - symmetrical meaning the same speed up and down.

Units

There is a major difference between UPPER and lowercase

MB = MegaBytes
Mb = Megabits
kB = KiloBytes
kb = Kilobits

MB/s = MegaBytes per second
Mb/s = Megabits per second
kB/s = KiloBytes per second
kb/s = Kilobits per second

There is 8bits to a Byte, 8kb = 1kB

1Meg connections only transfer at 128kB/sec or an 8Mb connection only transfers at 1024kB/sec or 1MB/s

Steve
Private Mail Services
http://www.private-services.com
Streamyx71203
Streamyx74485
Streamyx83007
Streamyx17459
Streamyx Streamyx Adsl2481799
Streamyx Adsl51127
Streamyx Adsl53342
Streamyx Streamyx31318
Streamyx Streamyx Bill46198
Streamyx Streamyx Dns15741
Streamyx Streamyx Selangor74030
Streamyx Streamyx Streamyx53854
Streamyx Streamyx Adslguide23257
Streamyx Combo68059
Streamyx Streamyx U Com My47561
